Dr. habil. Martin Thunert

Martin Thunert is Senior Research Lecturer for Political Science at the University of Heidelberg’s Center for American Studies (HCA) since 2007. He also teaches at the Political Science Department of the University of Heidelberg. He is a graduate of Johann-Wolfgang-Goethe University Frankfurt and holds postgraduate and doctoral degrees from the University of Augsburg and the University of Hamburg. 

Dr. Thunert worked as a visiting professor of political science and political management at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, University of Mannheim and at Bremen University of Applied Sciences. He has held research fellowships at Harvard University’s Center for European Studies. McGill University, Canada and the University of Southampton, UK and he has worked as a committee staff member for the late U.S. Senator Edward M. Kennedy. Since 2007 Thunert is Research Coordinator for Canada, Chile, Mexico and the U.S. in the Bertelsmann Foundation project Sustainable Governance Indicators. (

His areas of teaching and research are comparative politics – with a regional focus on North America and the UK – as well as public policy, lobbying and policy advice. Martin Thunert has written and lectured widely on think tanks, policy advice and lobbying as well as on American and Canadian politics. He is the co-editor of a Handbook on Policy Advice (in German), founder and co-editor of a journal on Policy Advice and Political Consulting (ZPB) as well as co-editor of Zeitschrift für Kanadastudien (Journal of Canadian Studies in the German-speaking Countries).
